Ten Good Reasons to Vote Against George Bush
| 1. You are unemployed. | Guess what? There are about 9 million of us in the same boat, thanks to the Republicans' Trickle Down theory of economics. If every unemployed person in America, and their eligible family members, voted against George Bush this November, we, alone, could swing the election. Remember, there were only 6 million of us in this boat when George took office. He's been giving away jobs from day one. |
| 2. You are tired of paying for foreign wars and their aftermath. | Not only are we fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan - we have troops fighting and dying in the Balkans, on the African continent, and God knows where else. If we had a president who refused to get us embroiled in pointless wars, and who was willing to let other countries settle their own squabbles, we would reap a true Peace Dividend. |
| 3. You are tired of being lied to. |
Q. How can you tell if George W. Bush is lying? A. His mouth is moving. It appears that George is a liar of mythical proportions, ranking right up there with Rush. Entire books have been written about George's fabrications and cover-ups. Above all else, he lied to get us into a war. You expect lies from a right-wing talk show host. You expect your President to tell you the truth. George's lies are inexcusable. |
| 4. You are a veteran. |
C'mon now, can you really believe George when he tells us that no strings were pulled to get him into the Texas Air Guard at a time when there was a long waiting list? It meant NOT having to go to the Nam! What about his under-funding of veterans programs? Congressman Peter DeFazio says there are 150,000 veterans waiting six months for a doctor's appointment. 14,000 vets have been waiting 15 months or more for their "expedited" disability claims. 50,000 vets nationwide are subject to the disabled veterans tax. More VA facilities are targeted for closure. And he's proposing to cut combat pay for active duty personnel as well. Whether we were drafted, or signed up on our own, we went. We served. Lots of us died, and lots more came home only partially whole. The United States owes those people a debt of gratitude, not broken promises. I'm especially mad about some draft-dodging Ivy League child of privilege sending other National Guard units to serve in a war zone for a year or more, where many of them are dying. There's a special irony here that just sticks in my craw. Shame on you George! |
| 5. You care about the environment. | It would take at least another book to describe George Bush's transgressions against the world in which we live. Instead of going on a rant here, I'll give you the chance to check my web page on The Environment, where you can get an overview. |
| 6. You are not a millionaire. | Maybe there should be a law against discriminating against poor people. Maybe that would protect us from George and his band of raiding Republicans. Here's one example: When pimping his first tax cut, George said taxpayers would receive an "average" tax cut of $1,100. Here in Oregon, half of our taxpayers will receive less than $100. The "average" Oregonian will receive $300. But the average millionaire will receive $40,000 in tax cuts. One more reason I'd rather be rich! |
| 7. You're sick and tired of being ripped off by Big Business. | Didn't it feel great after NAFTA was passed, to watch all those family wage jobs leaving America for third world countries? Didn't you feel patriotic every time you went down to sign up for your unemployment check (until your benefits ran out)? Between tax dodges and "international business," the big guys not only have their hands in our pockets, they have a free rein at profiteering (think of our pharmaceutical companies). This can be changed, but it will never happen with a Bush in the White House. |
| 8. You want to retire someday, and will need Social Security and Medicare to help you out. | Are you aware (and here I cite data from Congressman DeFazio) that George Bush has proposed spending the entire Social Security surplus of $2.4 trillion and the entire Medicare surplus of $500 billion to finance tax cuts for those earning more than $311,000 a year, and for deficit spending (wars, conglomerate federal agencies, etc.). I was counting on that money being there if I am ever able to retire. The only way to stop George from looting it all is to boot him out of office! |
| 9. You want your civil liberties back. | Detaining prisoners indefinitely without benefit of counsel, unlimited wiretapping, monitoring of wireless and internet communications, search and seizure without a warrant - these are just a few of our civil liberties that George and company have revoked. Let's get 'em back. Vote the bastards out! |
| 10. You care about public education. |
Good, bad, or indifferent, our public schools educate more than 90% of the kids in this country. The federal government provides a significant amount of the money for those schools. About 1/3. George has cut the funding back seriously, imposed "No Child Left Behind" which creates a lot more work for teachers and schools without helping the problem at all, and he has a pilot voucher system going on in Washington D.C. this year. Problem is, if the feds can't afford to pay for public school costs now, how will they ever pay the costs for sending kids to private (and more expensive) schools? The reason our Republican rulers don't care about public education is because their kids don't go there. They attend ritzy private schools, like George did. Better to take some of the billion dollars a week we are spending in Iraq, and help out the public schools in this country. Vote! You can help that village in Texas get its idiot back. |
