Mr. Potato Head With Hair
This is a "Mr. Potato Head" like they originally were, homemade! This project teaches creativity but it can also teach how plants grow. Its fun for all ages (even adults!)
Materials
*A Potato (The larger the better for the most part)
*Seeds (any leftover seeds will pretty much work. Grass seed it probably the easiest, but you can use alfalfa, parsley, cilantro, thyme, oregano, etc...)
*A small amout of soil (backyard stuff is fine or potting)
*Decorations (For example; googly eyes, construction paper, pipe cleaners, scrap material, fun foam, trinkets, old costume jewelry, anything you can think of.)
*A Sharp Knife (Adult use only!!!!)
*Glue
*Plate or something to set it on
Start by evening off the bottom of the potato with the knife so that it freely stands. Then cut off about a 1/4inch from the top of the potato. Scoop out a little of the potato on the inside (a melon baller works great for this, but a spoon would be fine too) Now decorate your potato. Add eyes a mouth (fun foam or felt or a pipe cleaner,) a nose, clothes, jewelry, ears, etc.. Let your creativity flow, you could make one that looks like yourself, your friend, a monster, one of each member of your family, your dog, you decide. Now, after you've decorated it place a bit of soil in the top of your potato head. Add some seeds and cover with a dusting of some more soil. Water and put in a sunny spot. In a few days you will have some sprouts comming out. Keep watering and giving sunshine. After a while your plants may get a bit overwhelming so why not give your plant "hair" a "haircut"? Have fun with it style the hair add bows etc.
