Potato Beads
Easy jewelry that everyone can make. It actually looks really nice too. Any kid can have success, and colors are up to you!
Materials
Potatoes (a little old & a bit sprouty is ok)
wooden skewers
acrylic paints
Thin elastic thread
A sharp knife & potato peeler (Adults only!)
Spray Sealer (gloss or matte is ok)
**Instead of sealer you could use white glue but sealer works better and is faster.
A night or two before you will do this project the adult should peel and cut the potatoes. 3/4 inch cubes are about right, a little larger is ok. (Perfection not required!) String the potato cubes on the skewer spacing them 1/2 inch apart or so. Let them dry this usually take 24-48 hours. (You could speed this up in the oven on really low, but I have never done this so exact times I don't know.) Now after they are fully dry paint them. Any colors would look great, If you do a teal, grey, black then it looks similar to turquoise, experiment. Sometimes the messier the paint the better they look too. After you have finished painting let them dry fully. Once dry spray with the sealer. Once the sealer is dry then string them on the elastic. The potatoes, and size of elastic depend on whether you are making rings, bracelets, necklaces, dog collars, anklets, etc... Size them, string them, and tie them off. These are absolutely fabulous!
