Baby Shower Gift Ideas

Giving a baby shower is a wonderful gift to the mother, but its always nice to still get something (although not necessary) for her. Whether or not you get the mother a gift it is the responsibility of the hostess to know where the mother is registered and what types of items she needs, or wants, including her planned parenting styles. (By this I mean if she is planning on breastfeeding then lots of bottles aren't neccesary, not to mention that there are many different types of bottles now and the mother may have a preference, or if they're planning on attatchment parenting then swings and exersaucers aren't really wanted either and the money could go to better use.) This sounds like a lot of work, but many times when the guests RSVP they ask for suggestions or ideas, or sometimes they say what they're planning on getting so you can tell them if someone else is getting it for them. Here are some suggestions for gift items that many mothers really use, hopefully there is a wide enough $$$ range for everyone.

Gift Ideas
I love to give gift "baskets" where I take a useful item and then place a few items into it, this can get expensive, but if you are careful or if you go together with someone it can also be very useful!

"Basket Ideas"

  • Laundry Basket
These always come in handy! And great to help take the items to her car after the party.
  • Diaper Pail
If you get a plain bucket and she gets a diaper genie also, she could use this as a clothes basket also.
  • Clear Plastic Stackable Storage Bins
    These always come in handy!
  • Baby Bathtub
    Always needed.
  • Diaper Bag
Only do this if you know the mother REALLY well, she'll be carrying this for up to 3 years you want it to match her style.
  • Inflatable Kiddie Swimming Pool
Useable as the child gets older
  • Plastic Shoe Boxes
These can be used later for storage, or keep in the car with baby traveling necessities.
  • Picnic Basket
I usually fill this with paper plates, disposable silverware and cups so that the parents can use after the baby is born to spend more time together not washing dishes.
  • Clothes Hamper
A cute wicker basket or an actual hamper it doesn't really matter, but will come in handy!
  • Bathroom Stool
There is a great bathroom stool by The First Years that has a compartment in the seat that is vented and can be used to keep bath toys in it. I personally found this to be an absolute must and able to be used from 6 months to 5-6 years.
  • A Large Tin Or Plastic Container
To be used as a Time Capsule, it can be decorated or just plain.

Great Basket Fillers

My biggest suggestion about baby gifts is if you buy anything that is like clothes or diapers NEVER BUY NEWBORN especially for a shower. If she doesn't have anything and is in the hospital then ok, but otherwise many babies are in newborn size for no more than a couple of weeks if at all. (My boys were both in size 1 diapers and in 3-6 mo clothes when we left the hospital. So all my newborn sized clothes went unworn.) They spend quite a bit of time in the 12 mo sized clothes. Also be sure that it is climate appropriate. If the baby is born in March in Illinois and you buy size 6 mo winter bunting, it will probably go unused. But some winter items can be used in summer on cool nights, just be realistic.

  • Formula Samples
Many children need to experiment before finding the right formula. (under $10 if you buy a full can sometimes you can get them free if you search)
  • Baby Wipes
You should get 100% alcohol and fragrance free, that way they should be ok even if baby has very sensitive skin. ($3-5)
  • Burp Cloths
Either specificly made as burp cloths or cloth diapers are great to use too. ($2-5)
  • Recieving Blankets
These are a great gift and you can always use more. If you have a sewing machine and know just basic stitching then go to the fabric store and buy in one yard incriments baby flannel fabrics. Then wash in baby soap and sew a seam around all edges. It saves money and gets a great useful gift, that's handmade! ($1-5 a piece)
  • A Blank Mommy Journal or Scrapbook
This way mom can have a wonderful keepsake for the baby that can be started from day one. ($5-15)
  • Rearview Car Baby Watcher
Since baby is backwards for the first year it can be quite worrysome if baby is crying and you can't see why. This clips or suctions to the back and can be aligned so that the baby can be seen. ($2-3)
  • Onesies
These are one of the greatest inventions for babies of all times, buy in multiple sizes or at least larger (6 mo +) and they will be used again and again! ($6-8)
  • Gripper Jar Opener
One of those rubber circles can be a lifesaver since sometime those little babyfood jars can be quite difficult to open. (Under $1)
  • Box/Canister Rice Cereal
This will be probably be baby's first meal, as of about month 4. So it will be nice to have on hand. ($2-3)
  • Disposable Diaper
Even if the mom is planning on using cloth diapers they can use these for outings to make life a bit easier. ($6-8.00)
  • Penny with the year of birth on it.
A great keep sake for mom and baby ($.01)
  • Antibacterial Hand Gel
This is a great item to keep in her purse or in the diaper bag for changes on the go, or kids playing at the park and for dozens of other reasons. Bath&Body Works makes a great one that has many different smells, they also have antibacterial wipes in convenience packaging. (About $3.00)
  • Q-tips and Cotton Balls
These can be used for cleaning the umbilical cord or dirty diapers or applying vasaline (circumcision) ($1-3)
  • Polaroid Disposable or Regular Camera(With Film) These come in handy when she goes to the hospital and hubby & Grandparents want a picture of the new bundle. Who wants to go to the 1hr photo shop on such a momentus occasion? Spending a little more will get you a regular multi time use camera. ($15-50)
  • Towels and Washcloths
Hooded towels are nice for some especially when baby is little, but I and others still prefer to get the nice fluffy regular ones. These can be used for years and years! ($3-15 depends on how many you buy, you could actually easily spend more also, but a few are great!)
  • Keepsake Baby Book
I have noticed that first time moms sometimes get more than one, but second and third (or more) time moms rarely get these at all. Keep your receipt just in case, but it's great for mom to have! ($5-30)
  • Birth To Year Book
Now that the pregnancy is almost over give her a book for the next stage! A great one is What To Expect The First Year by Eisenberg, Murkoff, and Hathaway ($10-20)
  • A Lullaby CD/Book
I remeber when my first son was born I couldn't remeber any lullabies. These are a great gift. You can play them for the baby or sing them yourself. ($5-30)
  • A Dry Erase Board
A dry erase board with a calender and coarkboard and marker, etc... These are great to remind about doc apts and special dates to remeber. ($10)
  • Crib Sheets
If you get solid colors then most likely it'll match any nursery and be able yo be used on a toddler bed too.($3-10)
  • Baby Socks
I believe this to be one of the greatest gifts. Everyone buys outfits, but you never have socks to match and even the parents can forget to buy them (get larger than newborn sizes!) ($2-5)
  • Baby Laundry Soap
Please buy fragrance and dye free, you don't want to irritate baby's gentle skin. ($3)
  • Nail Clippers
The easiest way of clipping babies nails, and they're so small its easy to lose them. (So if she gets more than one that's ok) ($1)
  • Spray Stain Remover
Its a known fact that babies can stain clothing. Either by formula (most stain,) spit up, or messy diapers that can sometimes leak, she'll use it! ($5)
  • Parent Type Magazine Subscriptions
Great for new moms and dads. If you know there will be multiples there are magazines that are specific for this too. (it depends on the magazine, but usually about $10-20)
  • Baby Shampoos, Lotions, Diaper Rash Ointments, etc.
These are great to take an added expense off of mom and dad's wallet. Rarely are these items returned. (About $2-3 a piece)
  • Books
It is never too early to read to a child these are great to get! (It depends on the book)
  • Nightlight
These can go in either the baby's room or in the bathroom or kitchen for night time feedings. ($1-15+)
  • Fork & Spoon Set
For when baby starts eating on his own this will come in handy. ($3-5)
  • Plastic Bowls & Plates
If you get the bowls with covers they come in handy for snacks too. Plastic plates are something that not many family's have, so these can come in handy. ($3-10)
  • Baby Food Grinder
This can come in handy as baby starts eating solid foods. It saves a lot of money for them and can increase the nutrition of the food that baby is eating. ($5-8)
  • Disposable Plates, Silverware, & Cups
After the baby has arrived mom and dad have their hands full. Let them spend extra time together without worrying about doing dishes. ($3-10)
  • Gift Certificates For Delivery
Choose a restaurant near their home (so you know they will definately deliver to them) pizza is usually perfect for everyone. Enclose a menu too so that they know what they can get. These come in handy for after baby is born too! (Your choice of how much you want to spend, but its nice if you can give enough to cover at least one full meal for the two of them)
  • Film For Their Camera
You can always use film, another nice addition to this gift is a gift certificate for film developing. (You may want to add a note specifying that with the gift) ($3-20)
  • Birth Announcements Gift Certificate
Everyone wants to see the new baby, and parents want to show off baby, but it isn't always as easy as all that, so these are a way where mom & family can show off their new bundle of joy and get a great keepsake! (Its nice to get at least a large enough gift certificate for the mom to get at least the small package, if she wants to get more than that that would be fine its also nice to go in together on this one, it helps with cost. $30-50)
  • Quilted Shopping Cart Straps
These are great and they keep baby safe and sanitary (the seats in shopping carts are like #1 on germs and bacteria.) Many are usable as a highchair also. A nice one can be gotten at One Step Ahead (About $20)
  • A Toddler "Leash"
I hate calling them leashes, but they are great. In this day and time with all the fears of children being taken and even just wandering away, these are great protection. Sometimes you get a few dirty looks, but from most parents they know better and may even ask where you got them. (Usually about $5-10)
  • Stroller Cup Holders
Most strollers don't have a cup holder on the strollers. Many fold up and can stay on the stroller. ($10)
  • Safety Items
Outlet covers, cupboard locks, baby monitors, corner covers, tub spout covers, safety gates,etc... Keeping baby safe is very important. This will help mom and dad along. ($1-30)
  • Infant Massage Book
Great start for bonding and closeness between mom/dad and baby. ($8-15)
  • Floor Protector
These go under high chairs to protect the floor from any food that may (hehe I mean will) land there. ($3-5)
  • Nursing Pads, Nursing Pillow, Nursing Stool, & Nursing Shirts
For the mom that plans to nurse these are so welcome! They help so much and ease this sometimes not so easy task, especially when they are both just learning. ($5-50)
  • Casting Sets
These are for casting the foot and or hand of baby in plaster. they last for years and years. A wonderful memory for the family. ($20-30)
  • Bibs
Plastic lined or disposable are best, velcro or snap are great too! Always can a mom use these, they get dirty fast. ($1-5)

Gifts For Mom

Its nice to include some things for mom in your gift for the baby, so here are some ideas that mom is sure to appreciate, and they're just for her!

  • A voluptuous terry cloth robe.
To use at home and to take to the hospital with her.
  • Comfy slippers
to wear around the house and at the hospital
  • Aromatherapy Candles
  • Aromatherapy Bath Items
  • Dinner Date
for her and hubby with everything taken care of
  • A frozen casserole or other food item.
It's such a relief not to cook when you're tired!
  • A stylish nursing top
  • A nursing nightie
  • A massage
  • Create a book of recipes
(for both food and play things) like favorite toddler snacks, play dough, bubbles, etc., and include tips, such as how to remove spots and stains. Use your printer to print the recipes and tips in fun fonts on various colors of paper. Buy a binder and cover it with attractive contact paper. Apply a large stick-on label and use a calligraphy pen or paint marker to make a personalized cover title (i.e. Helpful Hints, or a favorite quote about motherhood).

Some cute gifts that take a bit of time to put together, but they're definately worth it. The results are adorable and useful!
