The Port Aransas Beach Bums

Here you see about one-fifth of a small (86 cm. by 89 cm,) "Royal Bokhara"of the Turkoman group.

Why "Royal" Bokhara? Is it a magic carpet? Where is Bokhara? Would the BeachBums ever want to go there?

At the left is a closeup of the "gul", of which there are 15 in a three by five arrangement for this piece. The "gul", an octagon, is a tribal design characteristic and literally (in some places) means "rose".

• Why are some of these Bokhara rugs called "Princess?" or "Royal?"
• Probably for no good reason. Maybe it just makes them a little more desirable in the marketplace!
• Is this a magic carpet?
• You bet your camel!   But more about this later.
• Just where in this world is "Bokhara?"
• It is the ancient capital of the former Soviet Republic of Uzbek (Tashkent now holds that honor.)   "And, where is that?", you ask.  It lies between Turkmenestan to the South and Kazakstan to the North. The Aral Sea is in the Western part of the country and a fuzzy border with China, Afghanistan and Tajkstan lies to the East.
• Would the BeachBums have any interest in going to Bokhara (or Bukhara in some atlases)?
• Most definitely the BeachBums have an interest in going anywhere in this world. Unfortunately, like most of the peons of this Earth, the BeachBums are limited in the opportunity to travel -- so, we do our thing through the internet.
