September, 2009 Newsletter

Hello and welcome back! I hope your summer was great and you spent lots of time reading! I am looking forward to talking with
and catching up with our returning students, as well as meeting our new students! It will be wonderful to see all the cheerful
and smiling faces.
The library is stocked with new books and I am looking forward to sharing them when classes start on Tuesday (September 1st)!
When your child comes to the library, they will be checking out one, two, or three books (depending on their grade level). Please go
over with them the proper care of the materials that they are checking out. Remember, your child will be responsible for any damages
that may happen to the materials they have checked out. We ask that they find a safe place at home to keep their book, away from
siblings and pets.
If your child has a fine from another school or from last year at Basin City Elementary, they will not be able to check out materials until
the fine is taken care of. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Berndt at 509-269-4224.

Volunteers Needed

Anyone interested in volunteering in the library or helping with a book fair, please let Mr. Berndt know by a note or a phone call
at (509) 269-4224). We are especially going to need volunteers to help with the book fair. The Library Media Center is always willing
to take volunteers, even if it is just for 20 minutes we have something you can do. Some types of help needed are shelving materials,
processing materials, checking in and out materials to students etc.
All volunteers must be cleared with the office so if you are interested in volunteering, please call the office (509-269-4224) and let them know.

Follett's Destiny Library Manager

The School District's Library Media Centers use Follett's Destiny Library Manager which combines circulation, cataloging,
searching (including the internet at approved sites), reporting and management in one centrally installed library system. Destiny Library Manager is accessible to our entire educational community 24/7 from school and at home. This browser-based software
will enable all resources to be accessed via a central catalog. Key features are: -- Destiny shows books and other resources available at every school in the North Franklin School District, multiplying the collection available to our staff. -- Destiny is searchable not only by key word, title, author, subject, and series, but also by correlation to Washington State's EALRs and Grade Level Expectations.. -- Destiny makes suggestions of other subjects that are related to the book / resource selected. A direct link takes the reader to a new list of options. -- Destiny allows the user to make a booklist (Resource List) of book selections and other resources. -- Destiny creates a bibliography from a booklist (Resource List) with a touch of one button. -- Search results show the illustrated book cover. Click the book cover to see reviews and even the table of contents.. -- To provide access to our ESL students and their parents, the catalog can be searched in Spanish. -- Destiny is image-rich. The book cover is pictured in the search list. Selecting the book displays valuable information, such as the copies available in all the elementary schools, a description of the book, the bookÍs reading and interest level, AR leveletc. Clicking on the book cover (Title Peek) allows the reader to explore book pages and read reviews. -- Every search returns a link(s) that connects the searcher to pre-selected, teacher-approved, grade-leveled web pages that correspond to the search terms selected. The ability to search for both books and web sites correlated to Washington State's EALRs and Grade Level Expectations will make Destiny an invaluable tool for teachers, curriculum offices, and families.
