Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement (late model
My 2003 Chevrolet Silverado C1500 Pickup
has a worn lock cylinder housing. The key cylinder has been replaced with
a new key, and a new lock cylinder housing installed. When I reassembled
everything, the car started but quickly died when the key was released
to the "run" postion. Also, the Passlock Security Light (amber colored car with lock light) on the dash or instrument cluster stayed on
when the ignition switch was turned on.
What do you think is wrong with my car?
I spoke with a local GM service technician
in my town and he suggested the following fix to solve this problem...
The "car with lock" light on the dash
indicates a failure with the ignition lock cylinder/passlock sensor assembly.
However, before replacing the sensor assembly, you should initiate the
security relearn procedure to see if this solves the problem...
First disconnect battery for 10 minutes,
then reconnect the battery and perform the folowing procedures:
1. Bump the key in "start" position for
a second, then
2. Leave the key in the "on" position
for 10 minutes, then
3. Turn the key "off" for 5 seconds, then
5. Turn the key "on" for 10 minutes, then
6. Turn the key "off" for 5 seconds, then
7. Turn the key "on" for 10 minutes, and
8. Start the engine.
"Oh my goodness, when I turned the key
to "start" in step 8, the "double lock" light went "off and the engine
started and continued to run.
The problem was fixed and I was extremely
happy. One thing for sure I've learned, you're not going to be able to
fix modern-day cars without equiping yourself with knowledge and
information. The expensive Mitchell, Alldata, and etc manuals are excellent
for shop references, but all the "do it yourself (diy)" auto mechanic needs is a top rated Google search engine and a few Youtube
videos. It so easy!
GM Passlock Security Light Flashes - Quick
Passlock System Fault Code - B2960 Security
Problem: Engine starts and dies
If you find yourself stranded with this
probem and your engine won't start, and the security light is flashing
- here's what you should do...
1. Leave the key on and wait for ten minutes
- the flashing light should go off or illuminate without flashing
2. When it does, turn the ignition off,
3. wait twenty seconds, and then
4. Try to start the engine - it should
start and run.
This procedure is a temporary fix to get
you home if you are stranded, however the fault stays in memory and will
probably happen again. The standard repair procedure is to replace the
ignition lock cylinder and/or Passlock sensor and perform a relearn procedure.
The Passlock relearn procedure is required with replacement of the following components: the ignition lock cylinder, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Body Control Module (BCM), or Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).
