Text Box: Paperless Update:
10-01-10, Glad to report the Nuvi continues to be a great way to have auto routing to caches and to have all the cache info portable and in hand out in the field.
1-10-10 ,After using the Nuvi for a couple weeks, I am glad to report how well it works for paperless caching. With just one additional “Macro” program from the GSAK forum, this has proven to be a real good system.
12-26-09, I received a Garmin Nuvi 255w for Christmas, It has a ton of features including direct entering of Coordinates and a pedestrian mode for use off road. What I didn’t know was that it also serves as a great upgrade for paperless caching. There is over 1 gig of free space on the unit ,with USB connections and a SD Card slot. This unit can be used along with GSAK to load your pocket query (500 caches) into the Nuvi. They can be accessed to read all the cache information. No doubt there will be more information available on this feature to come. I will keep you updated here as well.

This year , I decided to try paperless caching…. Don’t get the wrong idea, I am not saving the planet or going green. I just knew there had to be a better way to have cache info available were and when you needed it out on the trail. The answer is going paperless and using a handheld PDA or Palm Pilot. Other devices that work (according to some people) are IPods and certain cell phones.
The beauty of the PDA, is that you don’t need the latest technology. You can pick up a used one on Ebay or like me borrow one from your tech savy kid! You don’t need a lot of memory either , the files are quite small. I use a 1 gig SD card but it hardly uses any space and I keep 5-6 files on it. I will give you the basic idea here.
I try to maintain one basic rule: If the cache is loaded in my GPSr, then I have the info loaded on the PDA. You should not have to guess if it is in or not. Period.
Things you need.
GPSr, with USB connectivity
PDA, Palm or other brand, with some type of installed memory 500 mb is adequate. USB connectivity is almost a must.
Good GPS Caching software. I use GSAK but there are several other available.
Software to view the text and HTML documents that you load onto the PDA. I use Plucker. This is a very good program and easily installed and used.
You should be a premium member to GeoCaching .com to download pocket queries .
There are several steps involved, here is the general idea.
Create a pocket query and unzip the file to a windows folder. Use GSAK or other GPSr Software to load up to 500 caches into GPS unit. Use GSAK or other software to export HTML documents. Use Plucker or other software to convert and load HTML documents into PDA. There is a wealth of information on this subject online.
It has changed the way we do caches, in a positive way and I would suggest it to anyone willing to try.
