"So dawn goes down to day, Nothing gold can stay" Robert Frost

Rebel lost his long battle with congestive heart failure on August 17 2002 and he died peacefully in mine and Mike's arms on our porch surrounded by his favorite toys; the popper and his bear. I am lost without him. He was such a wonderful friend and I know if he hadn't been so sick he would have been a hell of a competitor in doggie sports. Heck he was a real competitor in life. He fought this illness so very hard for 2 and 1/2 years and amazed all his vets. Rebel like all border collies had his obsessions. He was particularly fond of music, cats, and sheep. He was very enthusiastic about and intrigued by music boxes and he would sing along to the radio with me when we would go for rides. Car trips to the store are especially lonely now. Rebel loved his cats having been raised with his very own he believed all cats were named Norton. I often said if there were a make a wish foundation for dogs Rebel’s wish would be to attend a cat show. Rebel’s other obsession was sheep and after he got too sick to work them he would lay for hours just outside the fence watching them. We called it Sheep TV. He was my everything dog but most of all he was my baby border. I'll miss so much about him. 8 1/2 years was not enough . He was always Mr. Reliable, Mr. Play by the rules. I have other dogs that I love dearly but no one seems to be able to fill his paw prints. The house seems strangely empty and quiet without him. Everyone talks about once in lifetime dogs and usually they mean an OTCH dog or a MACH, but I have learned they’re all once in a lifetime dogs, from the couch potatoes to the national champion. All you can do is love them while you have them and in the end love is all you have anyway. I love you Rebel. You will always be part of me. I think you taught me more than I ever taught you and for that I will always be grateful. I look forward to seeing you again my very very best friend.

Rebel's medication information is provided only as a reference all medications below including holistics were added under the advice of a veterinarian. Before using any medication on your own pet please consult your vet for the proper dosage and drug interactions. We provide the medical information only so that other owners might know what options they and their dog have. I do hope this page will give other owners hope even thought Rebel is gone the fact remains that he lived for 2 1/2 years longer then any vet thought he would. We must have done something right.

REBEL'S MEDICATION
digoxn .125mg 1 and 1/2 pills twice a day Information coming on the drug soon
Coreg Beta blocker 3.125 Mg currently 1 tablet every other day for 3 weeks if he tolerates that we will move to 1 a day for 4 weeks. The eventual therapeutic dose would be twice a day. Coreg is a drug known as a beta blocker which are drugs that decrease the forcefulness and rate of the heart beat. They also cause relaxation of certain types of muscles in the blood vessels and other places so that the blood pressure goes down and it makes it easier for the heart to pump blood out. They used to be thought to make congestive heart failure worse since they decreased pumping forcefulness, but used carefully, and taking into account all of their effects, they are now used regularly to treat heart failure in humans.
Vasotec/enalapril 10 mg twice a day The drug blocks the release of hormones which cause salt and water retention and heart muscle scarring. Alteration of kidney function or an increase in potassium level can occur in some dogs. These problems are reversible if the drug is discontinued. It is important to monitor the patients kidney function every 3- 6 months.

Lasix - as needed Lasix is a diuretic that helps clear fluid from a patients lungs. It is also used to try to decrease the risk of the fluid coming back once the failure is stabilized.

HOLISTIC MEDICATION
Coenzyme Q -10 50 mg twice daily A supplement involved in the process that produces cellular energy. Studies in humans have suggested it may strengthen the heart.
Hawthorn 1/2 a 500 mg capsule sprinkled on food twice a day. Folk medicine long used in heart problems
1000 mg Fish oil and 200 IU vitamin e once a day New research on dogs and heart disease show this to be very promising

REBEL UPDATES

Late Sept 2002 I have started a scrapbook for Rebel and Iam finding great comfort in remembering his life while working on it

Sept 6, 2002 I miss my little boy so very much but I am starting to heal. I have received such tremendous support from my friends. Its wonderful to be a member of the dog community at times like this.

Aug 19,2002 I brought Rebel's ashes home today

Aug 17, 2002 My Rebel is gone and I am lost

July26,2002 Rebel is doing much better and the new meds are helping. He even wants to play again. Every day is precious.

July 22, 2002 Rebel went into atrial fibralation digoxn has been added to try to bring his heart rate back down. Its a very dark day

May 18, 2002 I showed Rebel for the last time today. He was so good only a bobble on the go-out. I can see however that it would not be fair to proof him no matter how much he likes to train

April 30, 2002 Rebel's 3 month check up at MSU Rebel's heart murmur is now a V/VI which is an increase since his last check up. The left atrium while still grossly enlarged has not changed since his last visit. Dr Olivier feels that despite his condition Rebel is doing far better then he had expected. Rebel continues to amaze his doctors with his outward appearance. We continue to hope that this small miracle continues. Rebel's coreg dosage will be slowly increased to 2 pills a day.

April 27-28 2002Rebel makes his utility debut and makes a good showing for a green dog. We have some issues to work on but he really enjoyed himself and I feel certain that if he stays in good sprits he will do well. It was great fun to be back in the ring with him again!

April 18, 2002 Rebel and I went and had his portrait taken at Images Photography in Caro
April 8, 2002 Rebel's Lasix and Vasotec have been adjusted he now takes a whole Lasix in the evening and a whole vasotec in the mornings

March 17, 2002 Rebel is now taking 1 beta blocker each day and doing well

Jan 23, 2002 Rebel's started the Beta blockers Coreg today. It will take several months to bring him up to a therapeutic dose. Their is some chance he will not tolerate the drug also

Jan 18, 2002 Some good news for a change :-) Rebel went to his first utility fun match yesterday and he did really well. We still need to work on signals and go-outs but he looks very close to being able to show. Its always fun to be with Rebel.

Jan 10, 2002 Rebel went in for his 6 month check up. We had more bad news and by now I am almost use to it now. His murmur has now been graded a IV/VI and the echocardiography revealed his mitral regurgitation to be more severe. The left atrium is dilated to the point that his mitral valve leaflets no longer touch. Our cardiologist marveled that Rebel appears to be so healthy until you see his heart. The prognosis was 6- 12 months more of good quality of life if we do nothing. However we may try a new and experimental treatment (at least it is on dogs) using beta blockers. We will also be placing him on lasix. I will update this page as I find out more about the beta blockers. In the mean time we continue to hope that Rebel will continue to amaze his doctors.

Jan 7, 2002 Rebel is 8 years old today!

Dec 6, 2001 Rebel remains stable and has started to train for utility once again. He is over joyed to be working and I am beyond over joyed to have him as my partner again . We are going very slow and of course his training was oked by our vet.

August 26, 2001 The removal of much of the new medication seems to have stabilized Rebel again ! We will now go back to one vasotec in the evening and his regime of holistic medicines and vitamins . Rebel has been cleared to go on vacations with us!!!

July 20 2001 The cardiologist at MSU feels Rebel is being over medicated and should be taken off the digoxin and spirnolacton and go back to only one vasotec a day.

July 2001- Rebel’s blood count has drop 16 points in just 6 weeks I am very worried or family vet thinks we should seek a second cardiologist opinion.

June 2001- Rebel’s heart condition is much worse and he has been placed on several new medications . I just can’t believe my little boy is this sick.
