CALLER/TEACHER: Willis Simmons

Square dancing was first introduced to the Senior Circle members in Eufaula, four years ago, and many of our first class of 22 graduates have continued dancing, thus forming the club "Happy Circle Squares". They were joined by other dancers looking for the opportunity of becoming members of a local club, thus increasing the number on roll.
Caller Willis Simmons is now offering a class to beginners, which will last approximately 20 weeks. He tells the group exactly what to do as they are dancing. It is good exercise, although most of us forget about the exercise benefit as soon as we start the movements. The movements are set to music, and directed by the caller.
You and your partner will start to learn with a group of folks just as inexperienced as you are. The wonderful part is that you will actually be dancing to the music after about ten minutes on the dance floor. By the end of the session, you will be smiling and feeling very comfortable with the group during the learning process.
Just think about it--the only way a club can survive and grow is by attracting new members. You can rest assured every member of our club is determined and dedicated to making certain your have a great time when you are in the class, and will help make it fun learning to square dance.

QUESTIONS MOST FOLKS ASK......

Must I wear those "funny" clothes?   By "funny" you mean short skirts with petticoats! Or neckerchiefs for the men. The answer is NO, but there is a traditional attire for square dancing. For ladies, the prairie skirt is quite acceptable and this is a skirt, which is ankle or mid-calf length, with some movement or fullness. Today, many women still prefer the "short-twirly" skirts, worn with beautiful petticoats, and of course, petti-pants. Men wear long sleeved western shirts and bolo ties, with western pants, or denim jeans. During a class, regular street clothes and comfortable shoes are fine.

How many people are in a Squares?  There are 4 couples in a square, a total of 8 people. Two couples are referred to as "Heads", and two couples are "Sides". This is explained by the caller during your first lesson or two.

How much does it cost?   The cost is figured by the caller and his wife, and you will be instructed as to the amount at the time of your class.

When and where can I dance after I go through the class?   The calls are universal, and a caller perfers that you join the club, after graduation, and continue dancing each week until you feel comfortable visiting other clubs. You will be introduced to many wonderful dancers who start out the same way you will. Clubs are located all of the United States, and in other parts of the world--you are always welcomed as square dancing is truly "Friendship Set To Music".

Must I have a partner to take the Class?   This is a tough question. Some clubs focus on "singles", but we strongly suggest partners take the lessons. You will need a partner to dance with as you learn, and you certainly want a partner to dance with when you graduate. Singles are definitely welcome in the club, but you will find, that with a partner, you will have more dancing time than if you are "solo". There will be "angels" to carry singles through the classes, and singles will be asked to dance, but if you have a partner, bring him or her!

What about physical requirements? I have two left feet.   Don't even think about have two left feet. The caller keeps dancers moving, and if you can walk fast enough to keep time to the music, YOU CAN LEARN TO DANCE. Don't worry, we aren't teaching ballet or the tango. It's as simple as listening to the Caller.

Is it good exercise?   The top two activities to retard the "aging" process are square dancing and bridge. Both allow you to learn and to exercise your mind, but square dancing has the advantage of all that and good physical activity. You will forget that square dancing is so good for you because you will be having so much fun.

Can I come and watch before I make up my mind?   Yes! Please come--We enjoy having visitors. There is no charge and will feel welcome. Once you hear the laughter and the music, you won't be bored. Our "business" is dancing and having wonderful fellowship with our visitors.

Thank you for taking the time to consider square dancing, and making it a part of your exercise program. Willis Simmons, and his wife, Sue, can be reached for further information at (334) 687-5914. He is an experienced caller/teacher, and calls regularly for four clubs each week.
