I SAW

Alone again, a widow
yearning for human touch,
a pat on the back,
a welcome hug,
a quick kiss on the cheek
Even a hand to help me
step from the curb.

I hate to shop alone but
today it was necessary.
Near the lingerie department
I saw a young couple
clean but modestly dressed.

As they walked by sheer
night wear, she reached to touch,
Then looked at her husband.
He whispered, "We can't
afford it honey."
She looked at him wistfully
"I know she said."

And then I saw a precious,
secret look of intimacy
pass between them.
And, as they walked away he
was holding her hand.

I saw and my spirit was touched.
I saw and was refreshed.
I saw and I remembered.
I saw and I smiled.
