Good procedures are surprisingly difficult to write. Building good mental models, consistently explaining what each step is intended to accomplish, and how to accomplish it is only the beginning. Hints for operations that are not described in the procedure itself, menu guides, and navigational devices that allow users to pick the level of detail they wish to read are frequently overlooked elements of successful procedures. The following three pages of documentation illustrate effective use of all these tools.
