        - - - until they fused at the "twelve o'clock" position and floated just above the sun's disc. It resembled a mirage pinching off the top of the setting sun, turning green. It wavered above the sun for a few seconds - then it vanished.

        A short time later it reappeared and remained for a moment as the sun dipped below the horizon.

      Perhaps it was a sunset like this one that Jules Verne described in the final chapter of Le Rayon vert.

        UPDATE: 5/17/2002 -- Elevation ~ 60 feet above sea level


        Exact Spot, GPS + HandSpring Visor, elev. 60 ft.

          Several years ago, the professor asked me the elevation at which the photographs were taken. I did not remember, but said that I thought it was less than ten feet. He told me that judging from the thickness of the inferior mirage in the last photo that it was likely sixty feet.



          Recently, I purchased a Magellan GPS Companion for my HandSpring Visor. I returned to the exact spot where I photographed the Green Ray Sunset Sequence and determined the exact location.

        Guess what ? The elevation was sixty feet !
